Sleep apnea is characterized by episodes of complete collapse of the airway or partial collapse with an associated decrease in oxygen saturation or arousal from sleep. This disturbance results in fragmented, nonrestorative sleep. Sleep apnea has significant implications for cardiovascular health, mental illness, quality of life, and driving safety. This activity reviews the cause and pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in its management.

Diabetes poses a major healthcare challenge given its rising prevalence, cost, and risk of chronic complications and co-morbidities. Healthcare providers are required to address these concerns in a changing landscape of therapy and technology where treatments for diabetes continue to expand.  A review of current best practices, including updates in care, guidelines, and technology, as well as address co-morbidities including obesity and diabetes neuropathy will be included.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication of relative insulin deficiency affecting primarily type-1 diabetes mellitus (DM). DKA can occur in type-2 DM when insulin levels fall far behind the body’s needs. DKA is so named due to high levels of water-soluble ketone bodies (KBs), leading to an acidotic physiologic state. Ketone bodies, while always present in the blood, increase to pathologic levels when the body cannot utilize glucose: low blood glucose levels during fasting, starvation, vigorous exercise, or secondary to a defect in insulin production.

Food allergy is defined as an immune reaction to proteins in the food and can be immunoglobulin (Ig)E-mediated or non-IgE-mediated. IgE-mediated food allergy is a worldwide health problem that affects millions of people. Allergic reactions secondary to food ingestion are responsible for a variety of symptoms involving the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory tract. This activity reviews the prevention and management of food allergies and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in its management.
