Breast cancer evolves silently, and most disease is discovered on routine screening. This activity reviews the pathophysiology, presentation and diagnosis of breast cancer and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in its management.

Osteoporosis is defined as low bone mineral density caused by altered bone microstructure, ultimately predisposing patients to low-impact, fragility fractures. Osteoporotic fractures lead to a significant decrease in quality of life, with increased morbidity, mortality, and disability. The aging of the American population is expected to triple the number of osteoporotic fractures. This activity describes the evaluation and management of osteoporosis and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in improving care for affected patients.

Lymphedema is a chronic disease marked by the increased collection of lymphatic fluid in the body, causing swelling, which can lead to skin and tissue changes. The chronic, progressive accumulation of protein-rich fluid within the interstitium and the fibro-adipose tissue exceeds the capacity of the lymphatic system to transport the fluid. Swelling associated with lymphedema can occur anywhere in the body, including the arms, legs, genitals, face, neck, chest wall, and oral cavity. There are many psychological, physical, and social sequelae related to a diagnosis of lymphedema.

Migraines are a common primary neurologic headache that predominantly occurs in the working-age adult. Migraine attacks are frequently triggered by bright light, hunger, and loud noise. It is theorized that this causes contraction of facial and scalp muscles leading to irritation of the susceptible peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerves which creates a wave of spreading pain to the whole of the cranium. This activity describes the indications for surgical management of chronic migraines.

Multiple myeloma is a clonal plasma cell proliferative disorder characterized by the abnormal increase of monoclonal paraprotein leading to evidence of specific end-organ damage. The consequences of undiagnosed disease are severe. This activity reviews the underlying cause, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of multiple myeloma. The importance of early recognition, treatment, and an interprofessional approach is highlighted in this activity.

Sleep apnea is characterized by episodes of complete collapse of the airway or partial collapse with an associated decrease in oxygen saturation or arousal from sleep. This disturbance results in fragmented, nonrestorative sleep. Sleep apnea has significant implications for cardiovascular health, mental illness, quality of life, and driving safety. This educational intervention is designed to address the identified gaps in the care of patients with brachial plexus injury. Brachial plexus injury can result on debilitating pain and negative impact on the patient’s quality of life.  Awareness of surgical intervention for this injury and understanding patients who would benefit from intervention will help providers best care for patients with this type of injury.
