Activity Description:

This session will review the indications for NICU referral for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. The discussion will emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in ensuring program success. Key aspects of care from the cardiac catheterization perspective will be highlighted, including criteria for referral, coordination and transfers of care between the NICU and the cath lab, and strategies to maintain patient safety throughout and after the procedure.

Target Audience: 

This course is designed for Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, Nurses, and Allied Health Professionals involved in pediatric and adult congenital heart care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate clinical and echocardiographic criteria that support referral for transcatheter PDA closure versus continued medical management in preterm infants.
  • Describe the multidisciplinary framework, institutional resources, patient selection processes, and quality metrics necessary to establish and sustain an preterm PDA closure program.
  • Discuss best practices for post-procedural NICU care following PDA closure to ensure optimal neonatal safety and recovery.
