Activity Description:
Congenital heart surgery has achieved remarkable advances in anatomic reconstruction, yet some of its greatest remaining challenges cannot be solved by reconstruction alone. Children with complex congenital heart disease - particularly those with single-ventricle physiology - continue to face progressive myocardial dysfunction, limitations of prosthetic materials that cannot grow with the children, and lifelong risks of heart failure and reintervention.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, Nurses, and Allied Health Professionals involved in pediatric and adult congenital heart care.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the evolution of surgical innovation in congenital heart disease
- Examine the translational pathway for regenerative therapies in HLHS
- Explore emerging applications of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine in congenital heart surgery
- Discuss how congenital heart surgeons can serve as surgeon-scientists and clinical innovators
- Identify the scientific, regulatory, ethical, and implementation challenges
