Activity Description:

Chronic diseases are increasing worldwide, and growing evidence shows that the maternal environment plays a key role in shaping long-term health outcomes in offspring. This Medicine Grand Rounds will present the latest research on how maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation impacts offspring health during infancy, childhood, and later life. The session will also examine why metformin is ineffective during pregnancy and explore the risks associated with fetal exposure.

Target Audience: 

This course is designed for hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, registered nurses, allied health professionals, physicians and residents.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review glucose metabolism and insulin resistance in normal and diabetic pregnancies.
  • Identify risks and limitations of metformin use during pregnancy.
  • Explain how maternal nutrition and diabetes affect long-term health in mothers and offspring.
