A growth problem means that a child falls either below or above the average range of growth for a child's age, sex, family history, or racial background. Disorders of growth is one of the more common conditions in pediatric endocrinology. Growth disorders can occur for many reasons, which may be hormonal in nature. Growth may also be affected by other factors including nutrition, steroid use, bone disease and a variety of other chronic illnesses.

This lecture will cover how a primary care provider can evaluate early puberty in girls. Specifically, the physiology of puberty, distinguishing between central and precocious puberty, and distinguishing between pathology and benign conditions. The clinical and biochemical evaluation of puberty as well as management options by a pediatric endocrinologist will also be discussed.
