Alan-Michael Vargas, MD, FAAFP
Dr. Alan Michael Vargas is a distinguished board-certified family physician currently serving as the Chief Medical Informatics Officer and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Grand River Health. He is known for his commitment to community healthcare, healthcare equity, and physician wellness.
After completing his residency at Mount Sinai in New York, Dr. Vargas underwent the Advanced Training Program in healthcare outcomes with Brent James at Intermountain Health in Utah in 2014, focusing on data-driven systems and Six Sigma methodologies.
He has a strong commitment to advocacy and policy work, having served on the FAM MedPAC board 2019-2023, a political action committee associated with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Through this role, he has been instrumental in advancing equitable care practices and healthcare management strategies.
In 2020, Dr. Vargas was honored as Colorado Family Physician of the Year. He currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians and advocates for equitable and manageable healthcare both locally and nationally.
As well as on the board and past president of the Colorado Rural Health Center, our state appointed rural health office, advocating for improved healthcare access in rural areas.
In 2022, Dr. Vargas became recognized as a healthcare equity champion with CAFP after completion of 3 month certification on healthcare equity, diversity and inclusion. The following year, he completed programs in physician wellness and healthcare system resilience through the Leading Physician Wellness Program, a United Health Grant Funded program focused on systemic wellbeing changes in healthcare, and the Stanford University Wellness Director Program, with a focus on data analysis and outcomes.
