Premalignant and Malignant Skin Tumors

This lecture will focus on common types of precancerous and cancerous conditions. We will discuss risk factors and patterns of solar behavior for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Melanoma risk factors, adequate sampling of the melanoma skin lesion, and how to interpret pathology reports for melanoma, will also be discussed. The participant will be better equipped to recognize skin cancer, to interpret histologic data after biopsy, and to design treatment plans and/or make appropriate referrals for patients with precancers and cancerous skin conditions.

Target Audience

This course is designed for hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, registered nurses, allied health professionals, physicians and residents.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the risk factors for non-melanoma skin cancer and for melanoma, including patterns of solar exposure and family history.
  2. Recognize the clinical signs of common non-melanoma skin cancers, and melanoma.
  3. Assess pathology results with regard to non-melanoma skin cancer, and how to treat or refer a patient for appropriate treatment.
