Why Improving Access to Mental Health Care is an Ethical Imperative
Adverse mental health conditions in pregnant people can result in poor follow-up post-partum and worsening outcomes for conditions that arise during and after pregnancy; as well as increased risk for stillbirth, preterm delivery, fetal growth restriction, low birth weight, impaired bonding with mom, infant neuro-development, and increased long-term mental health outcomes for baby. Per maternal mental health statistics, 1 in 5 postpartum women will experience significant mental health symptoms. Providers caring for perinatal women are asked by their professional organizations to screen for mental health symptoms. This course will review maternal mental health conditions, how to screen expectant mothers for mental health conditions, and how to manage and treat these patients, ensuring positive patient outcomes for mother and baby.
Target Audience
The intended audience is physicians.
