James Walker, MD

Dr. Walker received his medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City and began residency training in neurosurgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, though he did not complete that residency. During his second year, he switched to a residency in anesthesiology . After completing that residency, he obtained fellowships in critical care and neurocritical care, all at the University of Cincinnati. He is board certified in Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Neurocritical Care. Since 2010, Dr Walker has served as medical director of Neurocritical Care and Stroke for the Ascension Via Christi Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center at St. Francis. Since 2011, Dr Walker has served as Program Director of the anesthesiology residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine- Wichita. In 2023 he assumed the role of Chair of that department as well. He is responsible for the oversight of training and education for 20 anesthesiology residents per year. Lastly, since 2007 Dr Walker has worked for Anesthesia Consulting Services providing anesthesia care for patients at Ascension Via Christi Hospitals and Kansas Surgery and Recovery Center.
On a personal note, he grew up in Nickerson, Kansas and earned his undergraduate degree from KU, where he played baseball. In 1993, he earned honors as both NCAA Division 1 Academic All-American and All-American Pitcher after leading his team to KU’s first and only appearance in the College World Series. That same year, he was selected in the third round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Baltimore Orioles and played 3 seasons of professional baseball before retiring following shoulder surgery. He and his wife, Kaely, have two children, Brandt and Brooke, who share their parents’ love of family and sports.
