Daniel S Felix, PhD, LMFT

Dan Felix has been treating mental health problems alongside physicians and other healthcare providers since 2008. His career as a family therapist has been integrated within family medicine in both outpatient and inpatient settings. He is experienced in multiple therapies, including EMDR (a specialized type of therapy for people who experience posttraumatic stress), cognitive behavioral therapy, and also therapies specific to couples and family therapy.
He grew up in Utah but met his wife in Pocatello. They married and then moved to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for graduate school. His doctoral internship took him to Indianapolis, after which he was hired on as faculty in the Indiana University School of Medicine. For the next four years he enjoyed training physicians and treating patients, but when a position came available as the Director of Behavioral Health at the Sioux Falls Family Medicine Residency he was excited to leave big-city life behind. Now a professor in the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, he continued to treat patients and train family doctors in counseling skills, addiction treatment, and cognitive behavioral therapy for the next eight years.
In August of 2024 he moved his wife and three children back home to enjoy the family-friendly, slower-paced, rural life of eastern Idaho. He is currently employed by the Community Family Clinic in both Idaho Falls and Rigby. He continues to help train resident physicians and also consults twice a week at EIRMC on the care of hospitalized patients. Though not a prescribing clinician, instead he provides trauma-informed psychotherapy and CBT both in office and at the patient’s bedside with this therapeutic relationship continuing into the outpatient setting upon patient discharge. He sees a wide variety of patients with mental health, substance misuse, and behavioral problems, including patients’ family members who may struggle with their loved one’s new diagnosis or condition.
He has a wife and three children. He loves all things outdoors including fly fishing, backpacking, and hunting with his two bird dogs. Dan speaks English and Russian and is actively learning Spanish.
