Joseph W. Mathews M.D., a board-certified Endocrinologist and Medical Director of Palmetto Endocrinology, was born and raised in South Carolina. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of Charleston, Cum Laude. He then achieved his M.D. at the Medical University of South Carolina where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. While at the Medical University of South Carolina, he served as chief fellow and helped to initiate the protocol of genetic testing on abnormal thyroid biopsies.

Dr. Mathews is also a Clinical Professor of Medicine for Mercer University School of Medicine.

He is a Fellow of both the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) and the American College of Physicians (FACP) because of his recognized accomplishments and achievements over and above the practice of medicine and holds certifications to perform leading-edge procedures and treatments. Specifically, he holds an Endocrine Certification in Neck Ultrasound (ECNU) and is a Certified Clinical Densitometrist (CCD®). He also performs his own ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsies in the comfort of the office and regularly hosts clinical trials to give patients access to the latest treatments available today. His practice includes a range of specializations including prescribing and fitting patients with insulin pumps.

Dr. Mathews' practice has drawn patients from out of state to benefit from his expertise in thyroid disorders, diabetes, cortisol problems and other Endocrine disorders. While he is a frequently invited speaker at national conferences across the country regarding various endocrine related conditions, his heart and home remains in the Lowcountry with his wife, two children and golden retriever in Charleston.
