JORGE COLIN-GARNICA, MD

My name is Jorge Colin-Garnica, and I was born in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico. I was raised in a family of six—my parents and three siblings, two sisters and one brother—within the close-knit community of Metepec in the State of Mexico. Although medicine was not part of my early environment, my first meaningful exposure came during high school, when my older sister became the first in our family to pursue a medical career. Her path sparked my curiosity and ultimately shaped my professional trajectory. I returned to my hometown to complete six years of medical school, training in some of the largest tertiary hospitals in the state during my clinical rotations and internship. I later served a full year of community practice in the rural town of Contepec, an experience that strengthened both my clinical autonomy and my commitment to equitable healthcare. After graduation, I worked as a general practitioner for one year before formally beginning my path toward pediatric surgery. My postgraduate training started at the Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez in Mexico City, where I completed a residency in General Pediatrics. During this period, my interest in surgical disciplines—particularly pediatric urology—became increasingly evident. I collaborated on a research project addressing urethral stricture disease and contributed to documenting our institution’s surgical outcomes, which further solidified my aspiration to become a pediatric surgeon. Upon completing my pediatric training, I moved to Monterrey, Nuevo León, to begin my fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Monterrey, where I am currently in my third year of training. My surgical education has been shaped by broad exposure to minimally invasive, neonatal, hepatobiliary, thoracic, and colorectal procedures. I have presented and co-authored multiple works at national and international forums, reflecting my commitment to academic surgery. I have also pursued advanced clinical experience through international rotations, including training at the Colorectal Center of Children’s Hospital Colorado, as well as multiple returns to my pediatric alma mater for focused surgical observerships and collaborative work. More recently, my academic interests have evolved toward the integration of artificial intelligence within pediatric surgical practice. My current projects aim to improve clinical workflows, enhance patient and family education, and strengthen resident training through AI-assisted tools and surgical simulation. This intersection of technology and pediatric surgery has become a central part of my academic identity and future vision.
