Harold Lovvorn, M.D.

Dr. Harold "Bo" Newton Lovvorn III currently serves as Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, a role he has proudly held since 2020. While a faculty pediatric surgeon at Vanderbilt across his 23-year career, Dr. Lovvorn has made consistent investigative contributions to pediatric surgery, particularly in the realm of embryonal tumors. His translational research program focuses on the complex signaling programs in progenitor cells of the embryonic kidney and hepatic primordia, offering invaluable insights into cellular self-perpetuation. Dr. Lovvorn has also maintained a keen interest in health disparities and inequities for various embryonal tumors but principally Wilms tumor in sub-Saharan Africa. Educated at Duke University and the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Dr. Lovvorn's completed his categorical surgical training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and his pediatric surgical training at the LeBonheur Children's Medical Center and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His scholarly portfolio boasts over 120 peer-reviewed publications and more than $1,500,000 in research funding from the National Cancer Institute, emphasizing his dedication to advancing pediatric surgical discovery and innovative techniques for surgeons to conduct the least invasive procedures when possible. In the clinical sphere, Dr. Lovvorn is best known for his expertise in minimally invasive surgical approaches to pediatric solid tumors, newborn anomalies, and pediatric trauma. He has also made significant contributions as the founder and Program Director of the Vanderbilt Pediatric Surgery Fellowship, a cornerstone in training future pediatric surgeons and growing the specialty.
