Throughout a career spanning 45 years, Tom has distinguished himself as surgeon, innovator, educator, and leader.
Tom served his Surgical Residency at MVC 1977-1983 and faculty positions from 1985-1990. At MCV, as a surgical resident he established the world’s second ECMO team; a technique now widely credited with saving the lives of tens of thousands of infants. As faculty, he and MCV colleagues and trainees pioneered research in scarless fetal wound healing
In 1990 he moved to Penn State, serving as Chief of Pediatric Surgery and then Chair of the Department of Surgery. In 1998 he was recruited to Stanford to resurrect and rebuild the Department of Surgery (1998-2021) -he succeeded. Tom also co-directed the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign for nearly 20 years. This program was designed to teach MedTech invention to teams of doctors, engineers and business professionals through interdisciplinary research and education at the emerging frontiers of engineering and the biomedical sciences. More than 12.6 million patients have been treated with tools and technologies originating in this program. There are 21 similar programs on 4 continents and ~300 graduates.
Dr. Krummel is chair of the board of directors at Fogarty Innovation; a not-for-profit MedTech educational incubator in Silicon Valley, past president of the International Scientific Committee at IRCAD, University of Strasbourg, France, and served on the board for Morgridge Institute for Research at the University of Wisconsin. He is past president of The Halsted Society. Tom also serves as a consultant to the medical device industry serving as Founders, or on boards of directors and SABs of more than 20 early stage start-ups.
Tom is the recipient of multiple Awards, including Presidency of APSA (2014), The William E. Ladd Medal (2020) from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the ACS Jacobson Award (2023) for a career of trailblazing innovations
In 2021 he joined Sante Ventures in Austin TX as a Venture Partner, now helping to ‘invent the future’ by finding and funding innovative healthcare start-ups.
