Thomas Inge

Dr. Thomas Inge is a Tenured Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine (November 15, 2021-current) in Chicago, Illinois. He holds the Lydia J. Fredrickson Board Designated Endowed Professorship in Pediatric Surgery and is the Surgeon-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and the Director, Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program. His practice focuses on advanced minimally invasive pediatric surgery and in particular, his clinical and academic interest over the last 2 decades has been in the surgical care of adolescents with severe obesity. Dr. Inge has been continuously funded by the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 2005 and was the principal investigator of the NIH R03 funded Adolescent Gastric Bypass and Diabetic Precursors study (2005-2006), and the NIH U01 funded Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery study (2006-2024). He is currently serving as MPI (multiple principal investigators) for the NIH funded Surgical or Medical Treatment of Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes (ST2OMP) study. He and his team have produced nearly 250 peer-reviewed publications, reviews, and chapters. He has also provided over 180 invited lectures for national and international professional groups. His leadership experience includes prior roles as Director of Adolescent Bariatric Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, as well as the Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Associate Surgeon-in-Chief at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Tom also serves as Chair of the FDA’s Gastrointestinal and Urological Devices Committee (2025-current), and has been a consultant to the NIH and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. He has also served in leadership positions on numerous committees and task forces for surgical and pediatric professional organizations including American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, The Obesity Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Pediatric Surgical Association.
