Michael Shen, MD

Michael Shen, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon with unique expertise in providing the most up-to-date conservative treatment methods as well as highly advanced surgical techniques to address all disorders of the neck, mid-back and lower back. He serves as the medical director for the spine program at HCA HealthONE Rose. Dr. Shen’s goal is to restore his patients to their desired level of activity in the safest and most efficient manner.
A Colorado native, Dr. Shen was raised in the area he now serves. He attended Homestead Elementary, West Middle and Cherry Creek High, leaving the state only to complete his studies at some of the nation’s best programs. Dr. Shen first completed his undergraduate degree in molecular biology at the University of California San Diego and then relocated across country to earn his medical degree at Tufts University in Boston, MA. After deciding to specialize in orthopedics, he sought a highly regarded orthopedic residency at New York University (NYU)/Hospital for Joint Disease in New York, NY. Upon completing residency, Dr. Shen furthered his specialization with a spine fellowship at the Spine Institute at St. John’s Health Center in Los Angeles, CA. He then returned to Denver so he could use the skills he acquired to serve his home community.
After more than a decade of practicing in Denver and Parker, Dr. Shen was named the Director of Spine Surgery at HCA HealthONE Rose. As Director, he plays a critical role in maintaining the award-winning surgical program at the hospital while continuing to treat patients full-time at locations in Denver (at Rose) as well as in Parker.
Dr. Shen is committed to offering conservative treatment options first whenever possible. If surgery is necessary for a patient, he uses the most recent technology and techniques such as minimally invasive surgery, microsurgery, cervical and lumbar artificial disc replacement, and non-fusion/motion preservation technology. These tools often lead to fewer complications, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries.
