Michael Porter

Michael G. Porter, MD, FACS, FASCRS is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita. He is board-certified in both general and colon and rectal surgery with more than three decades of experience in academic and clinical surgery. He has practiced continuously in Wichita, Kansas since 1991 and has extensive experience in both open and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Dr. Porter earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Southwestern College and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center. He completed his postgraduate general surgical training in Wichita and fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery at the Ferguson clinic in Grand Rapids Michigan. He has remained actively involved in surgical education, patient care, and institutional leadership throughout his career.
Since 2016, Dr. Porter has served as Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita, where he is responsible for resident education, evaluation, patient safety initiatives, and compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) standards. He also serves as Clinical Director at Wesley Medical Center and has held leadership roles on multiple hospital and graduate medical education committees.
Dr. Porter is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the Association of Program Directors in Surgery, and the Association for Surgical Education. At the state level, he has served as an executive officer and treasurer of the Kansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Porter has an extensive record of teaching medical students and surgical residents. His educational roles include directing morbidity and mortality conferences, surgical skills laboratories, journal clubs, and resident assessment programs, including the implementation of competency-based milestones and entrustable professional activities. He has served as an examiner for mock oral board examinations and is involved in faculty development related to surgical education and assessment.
Dr. Porter has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed publications in national surgical journals, contributed invited reviews and educational materials, and participated in national discussions on surgical education, quality, and resident wellness. He has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, an honor based on peer nomination and evaluation of clinical skill, professional standing, and patient trust. Dr. Porter has established himself as a highly respected surgeon and educator.
