Hospital Clinical Evaluations and Diagnostic Pathway of the Acute Chest Pain Patient for EMS

This activity utilizes case reviews to help the EMS provider better assess and treat the chest pain patient in the field. Participants will learn how to read EKG results to provide a differential diagnosis to evaluate and manage patients in the field prior to transport to the emergency department. Risk Stratification tools, chest pain algorithms, and clinical practice guidelines are provided as resources for providers to improve evaluation processes resulting in better patient outcomes.

Target Audience

Hospitalists, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Advance Practice Nurses, Registered Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, Physicians and Residents, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers.

Learning Objectives

  1. Differentiate between acute and non-acute chest pain presentations in the prehospital setting.
  2. Utilize clinical decision-making tools and protocols for determining the need for further evaluation of chest pain in non-acute patients.
  3. Describe the typical patient flow from prehospital encounter through potential cardiac stress testing for non-acute chest pain.
