Medical Ethics at the Bedside: Patient Autonomy, Consents, and Directives

This session will provide education on current standards of practice related to medical surrogacy, common law marriage, patient directives, and management of non-represented patients, including DNR considerations for competent adults. Participants will gain a better understanding of provider responsibilities when caring for hospitalized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees. The presentation will also review recent updates to Texas Health & Safety laws that became effective in September 2023 and discuss their implications for clinical practice.

This course is designated for the Medical Staff at HCA Clear Lake and Mainland

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

•    Describe the hierarchy for selecting an appropriate surrogate decision maker.
•    Explain legal requirements for honoring a properly executed advance directive.
•    Discuss the provider's role in managing hospitalized ICE detainees.
