Opioids 202: Opioid Management for Hospitalized Patients with Opioid Use Disorder and Sickle Cell Crisis

This is a live, in-person only event.
This lecture will describe complex opioid titrations including opioid rotations specifically for patients with opioid use disorder and sickle cell disease. We will discuss the various classes of opioid medications and the concept of cross tolerance, afterwards we will go through opioid conversion tables and then briefly touch on needs of vulnerable populations including patients with opioid use disorder.

Learning Objectives
- Identify and differentiate the various classes of opioid medications, describe their mechanisms of action, and explain the concept of cross-tolerance in patients with opioid use disorder and sickle cell disease.
- Apply appropriate opioid titration and conversion methods, using opioid rotation techniques and conversion tables, to optimize pain management in hospitalized patients with opioid use disorder and sickle cell crisis.
- Recognize the unique challenges in managing opioid therapy for vulnerable populations, including patients with opioid use disorder, and apply patient-centered approaches for effective pain management while minimizing risks.
