Kathryn Pena, BA, EMT, CSTR, CAISS
Kate Peña is a nationally respected trauma data and quality improvement leader with over 17 years of experience in healthcare, including frontline service as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and 911 Dispatcher, and more than 8 years of specialized experience in trauma registry operations, clinical data integrity, and multidisciplinary quality initiatives. With deep expertise in trauma systems and evidence-based practices, she brings a proven record of translating data into meaningful, patient-centered improvements in care. As Senior Manager of Trauma Clinical Data Registry Abstraction at Parallon, she leads a national abstraction team serving more than 100 adult and pediatric trauma centers across a workforce of more than 270 trauma abstractors. Her leadership spans strategic registry development, quality assurance in abstraction, performance benchmarking, and the design of scalable tools, policies, and educational resources. She holds dual certification as a Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry (CSTR) and Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS) and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has voluntarily completed Trauma Outcomes for Performance Improvement (TOPIC), Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), and Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) giving her the additional skill in integrating clinical awareness into the trauma registry perspective. Dedicated to professional education and outreach, she serves as a Stop the Bleed instructor and is a regular contributor to national and regional trauma symposia.
