Activity Description:
Non-ST-segment elevation (NSTE) acute coronary syndromes (ACS), encompass non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and unstable angina (UA), comprise greater than 70% of all ACS. Unlike STEMI patients who receive uniform treatment to restore flow in an occluded artery, NSTE-ACS patients have varying degrees of coronary obstruction, undergo more heterogeneous management, and have worse long-term outcomes. This activity reviews the evaluation and treatment of patients with NSTE-ACS and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in care for these patients.
Target Audience:
This course is designed for hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, registered nurses, allied health professionals, physicians and residents.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify risk factors and describe the pathophysiology for acute coronary syndrome
2. Identify how a patient with NSTE-ACS may present, and describe the evaluation process
3. Understand best practice management and treatment options
4. Describe the importance of well-coordinated inter-professional teamwork and multi-disciplinary communication in caring for NSTEM-ACS patients
