Activity Description:

This stroke series is being offered to medical staff in order to complete the required stroke education hours. Topics covered include stroke pharmacology, approach to the comatose patient, ischemic strokes, and hemorrhagic strokes. Presentations may include case reviews, peer reviews, and general stroke identification, treatment, and management of the stroke patient.

Target Audience:

This course is designed for hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, registered nurses, allied health professionals, physicians and residents.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Recognize the purpose and importance of the NIH Stroke Scale in acute stroke assessment.
  • Ability to identify each component of the NIHSS.
  • Comprehend the scoring of patients using NIHSS and using scores to determine stroke severity to guide clinical decision-making.
  • Differentiate between major risk factors for strokes
  • Identify early signs and symptoms of strokes using the FAST acronym.
