Activity Description:

Antimicrobial resistance is a major health problem in the United States and is often attributed to inappropriate antibiotic prescribing in hospitals. The potential consequences of inappropriate antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance include hospital-acquired infections, increased morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospital lengths of stay, and increased health care costs. This series will discuss key areas of antimicrobial stewardship. The purpose of this education series is to provide the providers with additional knowledge and skills to help optimize his/her antimicrobial prescribing habits.

Target Audience:

This course is designed for hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, registered nurses, allied health professionals, physicians and residents

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Explain the need for antimicrobial stewardship by describing the current state of antimicrobial resistance
  • List the unintended consequences of treating asymptomatic bacteriuria
  • Illustrate the ability to de-label penicillin allergies utilizing current literature
