Frostbite Management: A Review of Acute and Chronic Care

Appropriate and timely management of patients with frostbite is important to negative outcomes to the patient.  Understanding acute care needs as well as chronic care considerations is vital to equipping providers to best address the needs of this patient population.

Emergency Department - nurses, physicians, APPs First responders - EMT, paramedics Rural Primary Care

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Review frostbite pathophysiology, initial management and chronic considerations.
2. Identify when to refer patients to specialty burn centers
3. Discuss multidisciplinary roles in frostbite care: PT/OT, mental health, social services, nutrition and pharmacy
