High Risk Headaches

 A high risk headache is any new and sudden onset, typically severe, headache with the potential to cause damage to cerebral or precerebral structures or functions. Medical professionals including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists and other members of the healthcare team require ongoing education pertaining to the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with neurologic disorders. This course will provide learners with educational in advancements in research, recognition, diagnostic testing, medical and surgical management. 

Target Audience

Neurologists, emergency department physicians, neurovascular physicians, hospitalists, neuro-intensivists, neurology residents and fellows, medical students, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses and emergency medical service providers

Learning Objectives

  • Ability to identify symptoms/signs that make a headache high risk for a serious condition warranting a comprehensive neurological workup.
  • Understand elements of the routine workup for high risk headaches.
  • Knowledge from a case review of a patient presenting with a sentinel headache, learners will understand the process of emergency department and radiology evaluation and assessment.
