Activity Description:

This learning activity will review the incidence of leiomyomas; diagnosis including review of clinical symptoms and imaging; risks for chronic complications, acute complications leading to emergency room visit and emergency treatments. Presentation of available options for treatment including hormonal management, management of complications (hemorrhage), surgical management (myomectomy, hysterectomy, radiofrequency ablation of leiomyomas), uterine artery embolization by interventional radiology. Additionally, there will be discussion of the optimal choices for management depending on the characteristics of the fibroid, patient's age, fertility, associated comorbidities, acute complications.

Target Audience: 

This course is designed for hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, registered nurses, allied health professionals, physicians and residents.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify uterine leiomyomas and the magnitude of the problem.
  • Assess diagnosis and the potential complications related to different types of leiomyomas.
  • Evaluate different options for management; individualize and tailor the options for management based on pathology, patient’s preference and potential for complications if left untreated.
